Check in: The Ludlow
With an understated 1930s glamour, The Ludlow hotel stands out as more than just a hip establishment serving out-of-towners in the neighborhood. It’s situated within a neighborhood of immigrants, young boutiques, art galleries, bars, music venues and restaurants. In other words, it serves an interesting and eclectic mix of clientele. Named after the buzzing street on New York’s lower east side, I had high expectations as the hotel was the work of hotelier Sean McPherson - known for having a hand at other tasteful establishments such as the Marlton and the Bowery. When we checked into The Ludlow on a chilly Spring evening, we were immediately warmed by the fireplace in the lounge area, which looks more like someone’s living room. The vibe is definitely subdued with cool urban undertones, as evident in the hanging large surround Marshall speakers. A nice touch, though it can get loud in here.
Our room was stocked with luxurious amenities. Absolutely adored the classy bathroom, sink and tub, decked with gold and brass details. The decoration is minimal, which makes the selection of furniture and decorative features prominent and carefully chosen. There were no artworks hanging in the room, which made the other details stand out, such as the antique lamp fixtures, a touch of marble and shearling draped couches. More points to the fact that it felt really peaceful inside the room, even though we were atop a busy street full of bars. It is definitely one of my top picks for staying in the heart of New York, to experience the grit and glamour of this quickly evolving neighborhood.
